Acry - What? A Brief Guide to some RPG Acronyms

Greetings, Kids!

I've just a light post today. Something you might find useful, as you flit about the internet to this place or that. You see, I'm on Twitter a lot, and also peruse various blogs. At times, (and this is especially true for Twitter), the lack of room makes people likely to shorten the names of things by using acronyms. This is awesome, but if you don't necessarily know what a thread is about, a random acronym might throw you off.

In order to help with that situation, I've cobbled together a short list of acronyms I've been seeing a lot of on Twitter. The ones listed below are RPG (see, another acronym) related only. I've left out common texting acronyms (like LOL or STFU), as plenty of lists exist elsewhere on the internet to help you with those.

Before you say anything, I'm sure with some careful searching, you could find some RPG related acronym lists as well. This post is one to help my readers and followers should they need it.

  1. "Lot5R Legend of the Five Rings"
For this one I see L5R more than anything else.
Here are some more that I've encountered, off the top of my head.

3e/3.x 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons

    4e 4th Edition D&D

    2e 2nd Edition AD&D

    DCA DC Adventures

PFRPG Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, although I have seen this one use for the Palladium Fantasy Roleplaying game as well. I do think the the most common use is for Pathfinder. At this point I think most people just refer to Palladiums game as Palladium Fantasy.

    HEX Hollow Earth Expedition

  2. Old school gaming is rife with acronyms!

    OSR - Old School Renaissance
OSRIC - Old School Reference and Index Compilation
    LL - Labyrinth Lord
LotFP - Lamentations of the Flame Princess
GDQ - Giants, Drow, Queen (a set of AD&D modules)
    S&W - Swords & Wizardry

These are just the ones that I remember sending me off to Google when I first started reading old-school blogs.

And if you're going to talk about retro-clones or third-party publishing, a lot of licensing terms come up quite often:

    OGL - Open Game License
    GSL - Game System License
    SRD - System Reference Document

  4. GW = Games Workshop more than anything else, especially in the UK.

WFRP = Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, which was how the series was originally titled.

    FF = Fighting Fantasy

AFF = Advanced Fighting Fantasy (Yes, people still play these!)
